At Essex we have two world leading universities, University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University. Both universities are working closely with Essex businesses, from dedicated workforce training to products, processes, and services development. Entrepreneurial is not only found in Essex businesses but also our universities. It is thrilling to see that ARU won Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2014 and the Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship in 2016. According to the data released by Innovate UK, University of Essex is the number one university for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Every year these two excellent universities are providing thousands of qualified graduate workforce in various sectors of Essex, as a fresh blood injection for our businesses.
The Federation of Essex Colleges (FEDEC) comprises of all of the Essex based further education colleges. It also includes Essex Adult & Community Learning which is a service operated by Essex County Council and The Sixth Form College Colchester.

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is an innovative global university with students coming from 185 countries. Links with industry have always been important to ARU. In 2012, ARU launched our MedTech campus. One of the world’s largest health innovation spaces, it gives companies of all sizes access to research expertise, specialist staff, testing and clinical trials.
Hot on the heels of the MedTech campus, ARU opened the Medical Business Innovation Centre in Chelmsford in 2013. Now known as Arise Chelmsford and Harlow, it offers lab and innovation space, academic expertise and business support to start-ups and early-stage businesses.

University of Essex (UoE) is a university where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. According to the Guardian University Guide 2024 the university of Essex ranked a top 25 university and in the top 4 for ‘value-added’. It focuses on research, innovation and entrepreneurship, combined with a global outlook, positions it well as a hub for business development, collaboration and education.
Essex Business School is the largest department at the university and is recognized for its commitment to responsible business practices and sustainability. The university actively fosters entrepreneurship and innovation through programs such as Start-Ups Essex and the University Enterprise Zone.
Innovation Centre knowledge Gateway provides space for start-ups and established companies to row and collaborate with the university. It allows businesses to access academic expertise, research facilities and a pool of talented students.
UoE is the Number one university in the UK for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), the flagship Innovate UK programme, according to the data released by Innovate UK. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are available to all businesses, large or small, and empower them to innovate and grow through collaboration with leading university academics and newly hired talented researchers.
The university’s Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) helps businesses leverage data analytics and AI for decision-making and operational efficiency. With the growing importance of big data in business, Essex’ expertise in this area is highly relevant.
