Introducing Ambitious Essex Tech 50

Essex is at the heart of the tech revolution. The telecom and digital technology sectors boast around 4,500 businesses across Essex. They employ over 20,000 people and generated over £1 billion in Gross Added Value (GVA) in 2018!

To celebrate our thriving tech sector, we have created Ambitious Essex Tech50.

This list showcases the most innovative businesses in Essex. It demonstrates that the value of tech is not just for the sector itself – but for all industries, including manufacturing, energy and more.

Our rationale

The Ambitious Essex Tech 50 businesses were each judged against a set of criteria, including:

  • turnover
  • funding and investment secured
  • approach to skills and employment
  • local and global reach
  • growth potential

This is the first list of many! In the future, you’ll be able to nominate yourself or other inspiring businesses to join the list.

AET50 (A-Z)

Above Surveying

Above specialises in aerial surveying and inspection solutions for solar farms. They use drones, infrared sensors and image recognition to inspect the farms and their surrounding infrastructures.

Aerial surveys can detect issues and defects, helping clients to optimise their equipment and reduce down-time and maintenance costs.

Acroflight

Founded in 2018, Acroflight offers design, engineering and digital simulations for the aerospace sector.

Their cost-effective tools and data-centric designs have helped them to secure a £140,000 grant from the Horizon 2020 Innovative Tooling Fund. They’ve also recently joined the ADS Group, featuring some of the UK’s biggest aerospace names.

Acticheck

The Assure wristband, designed by Saffron Walden-based Acticheck, is the world’s first continuous monitoring personal alarm system.

Using patented battery technology, the band continuously monitors biometric signals without the need to recharge. As well as spotting irregularities, the wristband also detects falls and alerts designated contacts to real-time health information.

Advanced 3D Laser Solutions

Established leaders Advanced 3D Laser Solutions (A3) specialise in 3D laser scanning and modelling services. They use state-of-the-art technology to efficiently collect data for modelling, design and analysis.

As well as securing a space at Anglia Ruskin University’s specialist engineering hub, A3 has been commissioned for multiple international projects.

Affiliate Squared

Since launching in 2011, Affiliate Squared has become one of Europe’s leading online marketing specialists. Their advanced algorithms and behaviour technologies to help businesses unlock their online potential.

Their global network takes a performance-based approach to increasing sales. Affiliate Squared has delivered almost £250m of affiliate marketing commission in 2022!

Alcove

Award-winning Alcove helps vulnerable people to live independently. Their home systems include video call technology for elderly residents and a Digital Orientation Clock for dementia patients.

Alcove also secured a £15m contract with Suffolk County Council and delivered the fastest ever rollout of care technology on behalf of a council.

AND Technology Research

AND Technology Research (AND) specialises in product design and testing services. They’ve worked on over 350 projects since launching in 1980.

AND works across heavily regulated sectors – such as energy and medicine – providing exciting solutions. These have included imaging technology, a blood cell counting device and even firefighting equipment.

ANTOBOT

This award-winning start-up provides affordable robotics for sustainable agriculture.

Their AI-enhanced agri-robot technology is currently being piloted in two southeast trials:

  • The data-led fruit scouting service Insight™ provides real-time crop information on yield and health from field to phone.
  • the logistics-focussed Assist™ boosts harvest efficiency by carrying loads autonomously.

Aquature

Aquature’s bioelectrochemical technology converts wastewater into green hydrogen and other carbon-neutral fuels. AI software remotely controls the water treatment, enabling real-time performance visibility with minimal resources.

The final product costs less than £30/MWh and removes around 10 tons of CO2 per ton of hydrogen produced.

AVRT

The Adaptive Virtual Reality Training (AVRT) training platform specialises in eXtended Reality (XR) scenario training for high-risk areas. This includes emergency services and the military.

The platform is fully immersive, interactive and adaptive. It also integrates real-world objects, tools and equipment.

Bank of Telecom

Bank of Telecom’s platform acts as an automated international marketplace for telecoms trade with same-day settlements.

Delivering a unique blend of telecoms and fintech, the business improves security and performance for its users.

Bank of Telecom not only has several international offices, but also saw a £348m turnover in 2022.

Biomodal

This tech and analytics company researches and develops genome sequencing technology. They deliver products that bring the dynamism of our ever-changing biology into focus.

Biomodal’s research has helped this Little Chesterford-based business to secure over £109m in grants and fundraising since 2012, including from Google Ventures.

Camena Bioscience

Camena’s technology enables synthetic biologists to unlock access to genes with unparalleled accuracy. The tech offers access to long and complex gene sequences, which are normally difficult to produce.

They produce genes for a range of international clients, including those in pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

CGEye

With several years’ experience, CGEye offers innovative architectural imagery services. These include interior and exterior GCI imagery, cutaway models, 3D animation and architectural visualisation.

Their team specialises in property advising, multimedia, 3D modelling and more, helping them to provide exceptional quality to the UK’s leading builders, architects and housing associations.

Circuit

This app been transforming courier routes since 2018. Its planning and management tools help to reduce journey time, conserve fuel and track the exact location of deliveries.

The app saves couriers 2.2m hours every month through route optimisation. It’s no wonder Circuit is used by Royal Mail, DHL and more!

Clever Lili

GCSEHistory by Clever Lili was created by a mother-daughter duo in 2020. Their fun and effective History revision aid has since supported students and teachers around the world.

The tool sees over 20,000 users a month, each utilising the extensive content library, which covers the four major UK exam boards.

Cloud NC

Making single-click manufacture a reality is the ambition of this Chelmsford business.

CloudNC’s software, CAM Assist, automates control of CNC milling machines, helping to bring one-click automation to machining. Using robots, CloudNC helps to make more than $1tn of components every year for anything from aircraft to iPhones.

Concurrent Technologies

Concurrent Technologies produces leading long life-cycle computer solutions. They deliver products for challenging environments, including the military and aerospace.

Since their inception, Concurrent Technologies has produced its high-performance processor cards at its production centre of excellence in Colchester. They are also internationally recognised, with a second office in the USA.

Elixir AI

Elixir is a digital platform for child health, providing instant results from microbiology laboratories to the child’s family. They also offer personalised education based on the test results.

Elixir’s platform collects digital biomarkers from families in order to predict and monitor disease in children.

FinalytiQ

Founded in 2018, FinalytiQ’s software helps firms and private investors to make research-based investment propositions and provide positive client outcomes.

Companies already using FinalytiQ’s software include HSBC, Aviva, Nucleus and many more.

Future Motors

Billericay-based Future Motors develops electric motors that monitor energy usage and facilitate remote controllability.

Their flagship product – the Turntide Smart Motor System – reduces energy consumption by up to 60% and has already been piloted in the aerospace sector. Its accompanying app enables users to track energy consumption and distribution.

Goodbox

Ever wanted to donate to charity but not had cash on you? That’s where GoodBox steps in.

Their products help people donate to charity instantly, without carrying or withdrawing cash. Since their inception, they have secured a whole host of awards, as well as nearly £17m in fundraising investment.

Hangar 19

Having received over £1.37m in grant funding, Hangar 19 is a leader in smart city solutions.

Their products focus on sustainable transport, environmental monitoring and energy management. They have, for example, adopted new technologies to accelerate the use of electric vehicles and monitor e-mobility systems, such as e-bike schemes.

Hashtag United

This one-of-a-kind football and esports club boasts more than 40 teams and 400 players.

Since launching in 2016, it has grown a global fanbase thanks to its innovative formats and engaging social content. In 2018, the club entered the non-league pyramid and has seen three promotions across four full seasons.

Hiddentec

Hiddentec is a long-standing designer and manufacturer of advanced tracking equipment. Their systems are used to track vehicles and personnel by the military, counter-crime and counter-terror forces.

Their equipment is used in over 50 countries and helped the company to secure a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2012.

Homing PIN

Tilty-based HomingPIN helps customers to protect and locate their most prized possessions.

By attaching unique numbers to items such as luggage and tech devices, finders of lost property can easily contact the original owners to reunite them with their belongings.

The service is available 24/7 across the globe!

Industrial Robotic Solutions

Industrial Robotic Solutions’ robotic gripper is used in ready meal factories and retail food outlets. The system can assembly sandwiches, salads and more.

The business has already secured KTP funding from Innovate UK (in collaboration with the University of Essex) and has won various awards in the innovation space.

InfoGrid

Infogrid is changing the world through building intelligence.

Their AI-powered platform gathers and analyses data from the smartest Internet of Things technology. The ultimate mission of the platform is to make every building healthier, more efficient and sustainable.

KAO Data

Kao Data is pioneering the development and operation of innovative data centres that are engineered for AI and advanced computing.

Its Harlow campus provides a scalable and secure base for world-leading technology businesses. Sustainability is also key, with Kao Data ensuring it operates green centres using 100% certified renewable energy.

LimboTech

LimboTech specialises in virtual/augmented reality and motion capture for the creative sector.

Their live performance and digital technology saw LimboTech named one of CIC’s top upcoming creative tech companies in 2022. This recognised their innovative, world-leading work, such as large-scale interactive installations and virtual theatre directing.

Matchroom Sports

This sports event management and promotion business has been engaging audiences for over 40 years.

Based in Great Warley, they’re one of the world’s leading suppliers of sports programming. They supply most of the world’s major TV broadcasters and produce over 2,500 hours of sports programming each year!

Mission Zero Technologies

Specialising in carbon capture technology, Mission Zero Technologies’ Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology recovers historic CO2 emissions anywhere, at any scale.

They’re backed by global investors and working with international carbon removal partners, helping Mission Zero Technologies to move from lab to commercial plants in under three years!

MIT Dynamic

MIT Dynamic has been developing cutting edge software for the past 40 years.

The Margaretting-based business uses its UCentric software to support the communications sector, working with leading companies like BT and Vodafone.

Their dashboards also help clients to reduce their carbon footprints by displaying real-time progress of environmental programmes.

Ownable

Ownable’s app helps readers to identify and buy products they see in magazines. Their virtual village environment allows consumers to browse outlet stores and discover products based on printed photos.

This streamlined approach to ecommerce is helping retailers to reach new customers, whilst enhancing the shopping experience for consumers.

Paiger

AI-powered marketing services for the recruitment sector is the offer from this Loughton-based business.

Used by over 5,000 professionals, award-winning Paiger helps recruiters to build personal brands, identify business opportunities, attract candidates and have better conversations.

Pinnaca Retail Solutions

Award-winning, family-run Pinnaca Retail Solutions offers retail, IT support and consultancy products for clients across the globe.

Their bespoke Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) solutions help clients to fulfil their business objectives, whilst their additional services solve hardware and software issues, and even protect clients’ cyber security.

Planet XR

Planet XR is developing a new genre of games – Evolve Games – which will immerse players in a world shaped by the user’s own experiences and interactions.

Hosted on their own Breach platform, PlanetXR’s immersive offering will combine social and gaming elements to give the player an augmented reality experience.

Plextek

Plextek is a world leader in low size, weight and power (low-SWaP) RF communications, radar and sensing systems.

Their communications equipment helps clients to bring highly technical products and services to markets. Their breadth of experience is currently helping businesses in the defence, medical and industrial sectors.

Pluvo

Pluvo’s columns monitor and remove airborne pollutants from urban areas. The columns also act as advertising space for local businesses.

Pluvo’s scalability has helped them to secure over £500,000 in fundraising and grant funding from Innovate UK, Land Securities, Namier Capital, Royal College of Art and more.

Redtail Telematics

Born out of the Plextek Group, Redtail Telematics specialises in devices for vehicles, including Bluetooth kits, radio systems and vehicle tracking.

They have delivered more than 6 million devices, processing over 30 billion miles of data. Their products have been used by insurers, fleet managers and consumers across the globe.

Sketchbook Games

This video game studio is known for the multi-award-winning Lost Words: Beyond the Page. Gamers can expect an atmospheric experience and a moving story about grief.

Their next ambition is a scientifically rigorous game to support mental wellbeing that’s engaging enough to be played by hundreds of thousands of gamers.

Smart Networked Environments

Smart Networked Environments started exploring indoor wayfinding in 2011, when most mapping stopped at the front door.

They continue to specialise in indoor/outdoor mapping, positioning and wayfinding across complex sites, such as large buildings and university campuses. Their services are used across sectors, including education, health and commercial settings.

Sonic Data

Technology to help artists monitor and monetise their audio content is the offer from this Saffron Walden-based business.

Their patented technology enables artists to watermark, identify and protect their content, helping smaller artists to be the sole owner of their music and any royalties received.

Spaceology

Helping organisations to base real estate decisions on facts, Spaceology collects, analyses and reports utilisation occupancy and environmental data.

Their sensor technology delivers accurate, real-time information, which helps businesses meet capacity demands and increase workplace comfort, wellbeing and productivity.

Strike

Online estate agent, Strike, enables homeowners to sell their houses for free, whilst providing money saving advice in the process.

Strike generates money from its ‘recommended services’ partnerships. By removing traditional fees, they have gained a strong competitive advantage, managing to sell over £5b in property since 2011.

Tech Balance

Having secured several rounds of funding and grants from Innovate UK, Tech Balance tackles digital wellbeing and productivity for college and university students.

They empower students to strike a healthy balance between tech and ‘real life’ through tailored workshops and one-to-one coaching, which have helped over 1,000 UK students.

TECOSIM UK

Internationally recognised TECOSIM helps clients to achieve design, manufacturing and performance improvements through simulation and other innovative solutions.

Their team of over 500 leading engineers has provided practical solutions for clients in various sectors, including automotive, aerospace and energy. They even supported the 2012 London Olympic Games!

Teledyne e2v

World-renowned Teledyne designs and supplies specialist technologies for a range of niche sectors within science, aerospace, defence, oil and medicine. Their solutions are helping scientists to develop drugs, prevent disease and explore space.

Their reliable products include digital imaging sensors, electronic testing technology, aircraft information management systems and much more.

TEVVA
