How much do you know about the switch to digital landlines?

For most residents and businesses, the switchover will still be completed in 2025. However, BT have recently announced that to ensure that vulnerable residents can be moved over safely the deadline will be delayed until 2027.

For most people, this change will be straightforward. Before your phone line changes, your telephone provider will contact you. Depending on your provider, this could be a letter, text or email.

Since May 2024, Digital Essex have made it their goal to design their campaign with an emphasis on out-of-home promotion to target the digitally excluded population, printing over 4,000 leaflets to give to residents.

Throughout the summer, Digital Essex attended 12 events and 8 presentations across all districts of Essex, raising awareness and answering questions to prepare residents for the switch to digital landlines.

They engaged with over 1,000 residents, garnered over 1.5 million views on our adverts, and received support from a third of Essex’s parish councils, who helped spread the message in their newsletters

Please email digital@essex.gov.uk if you’d like them to attend your event next.

If any of the following apply to you or someone you know, additional support may be offered. Please contact your telephone provider if you:

  • are over 75
  • use a personal alarm or healthcare device
  • do not use broadband at home
  • live in an area with no mobile signal or, do not have a mobile phone device
  • have additional needs
  • have concerns or questions about what you need to do to make sure your phone line isn’t affected
